Complete answer: A stethoscope is a medical instrument used to listen to sounds produced within the body, usually by the heart or lungs. It was invented by a French physician named R.T.H. Laënnec, who described the use of a perforated wooden cylinder that transmits sounds from the patient's chest to the physician's ear. This monaural stethoscope was updated to be more easily shaped but it was largely replaced by a binaural form with two flexible rubber tubes, which are attached to the chest piece to the spring-connected metal tubes with earpieces. In particular, when listening to heart sounds, it is important to use both the bell-shaped, open-ended chest piece that transmits well low-pitched sounds and a flat chest piece with a semi-rigid disc (a form of the diaphragm) that detects higher-frequency sounds. Instruments of both types of chest component are arranged in such a way that they can be easily interchanged by turning a valve. The nature and material of the stethoscopes vary. Most of them are made of Y-shaped rubber tubes. This shape makes it possible for sounds to reach the system at one end, to move up the tubes and through the ear parts. Many stethoscopes have a two-sided sound detection system or head that listeners can reverse, depending on whether they need to hear high or low frequencies. Some of the newer models have only one pressure-sensitive head.
