Hint: The untranslated regions are the two sections one on each side of the coding sequence on a strand of mRNA. In addition to it, the untranslated regions are also called UTR.
Complete step by step answer: mRNA is a coding sequence strand which shows the presence of untranslated regions or UTRs one on each side of the strand. It is found on the 5’ end and 3’ end of the mRNA. 5’ side is called 5’ UTR and the 3’ side is called 3’ UTR. 5’ UTR is also called a leader sequence and 3’ UTR is also called a trailer sequence. The RNA which carries the genetic information from DNA to the ribosome is called mRNA. The process of protein synthesis takes place at the ribosome and this process is called translation. Initially, mRNA is transcribed from the corresponding DNA sequence and then translated into protein. The regions which are not translated into protein are termed as untranslated regions which include 5’ end and 3’ end. 5’ end is located before the start codon and the 3’ end is located after the stop codon. There are three stop codons are UAA, UAG, UGA.
Therefore, option D is the correct answer.
Note: Various medical studies are being conducted which have found the connections between mutations in untranslated regions and increased risk for developing a particular disease, such as cancer. The development of cerebral amyloid angiopathy is related to the mutations in the 3’ UTR of the APP gene.
