The United progressive alliance or UPA is a collision of centre- left political parties of India.The results of the 14th lok sabha election held in 2004 were very surprising as Bhartiya Janata party and Indian National Congress had a very tough competition and none of the parties gay and simple majority which resulted in a hung parliament . It is after this lok sabha election that the United progressive alliance was founded by the President of Indian National Congress Sonia Gandhi who now is also the chairperson of UPA. Many political parties came forward in support of UPA formation and after mutual consideration Dr Manmohan Singh was made the first prime minister of the first UPA alliance. He then continued for the second term as well. Samajwadi party with 39 MPs, Bahujan Samajwadi party with 19 MPs and the left front with 59 MPs had come forward in support of the formation of UPA. United progressive alliance thus is a collision of centre- left political parties of India. The Indian National Congress is the biggest member party of the United progressive alliance.
