The United Nations (UN) has six main organs. Five of them — the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council and the Secretariat — are based at UN Headquarters in New York.

1) GENERAL ASSEMBLY -
It is the main deliberative organ of the UN.

2) SECURITY COUNCIL - SHORTCUT
It is the executive body of the UN. The Council consists of 15 members, 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent. Five permanent members are France, Russia, America, China and England. The permanent members have a special power called veto.

3) ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL (ECOSOC) -
It is responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment and economic and social progress.

4) TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL -
It is in charge of all territories which were administered before the Second World War under the Mandate system of the League of Nations.

5) SECRETARIAT -
It is the chief administrative office of the UN. The Secretary-General is the chief administrative officer of the organisation and an international staff appointed by him. Its main function is to coordinate and supervise the activities of the UN organ.

6) INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE -
It is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Its seat is at Hague in the Netherlands. The court is composed of 15 judges for a term of nine years. 5 judges retire every three years.The members of the court do not represent their governments but are independent magistrates.
