Complete Answer:
The northern plains are located to the south of the Himalayas. They extended to the foot of the Himalayas to the Peninsular Plateau. These are river plains formed by the alluvial deposits of the Indus, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra, and their tributaries. Depending on the river that drains them, the Northern Plains can be divided into three parts.
The westrern part formed by the river Indus and its tributaries is called the Indus Plain. It lies mostly in Punjab and Haryana. Sutlej is a tributary of the Indus river.
The central part drained by the Ganga and its tributaries is called the Ganga Plains. It forms the largest part of the Northern Plains, stretching across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. The eastern part formed by the Brahmaputra and its tributaries is called the Brahmaputra Plain. It lies in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The flat Northern Plains provide abundant fertile land for cultivation. In fact, they are called the ‘food bowl’ of India as crops doe the entire country are grown in these plains.
The Sutlej in the west, the Ganga in the north and the Brahmaputra in the east are the river streams which constitute the Northern Plains.
