First, we shall find the relation between the focal length and power of a lens. Henceforth, we will be able to find the length of the tube of the telescope as it is the sum of the focal lengths of the two lenses.

The telescope consists of two lenses called the objective lens and the eyepiece lens. The objective lens forms the diminished image of any far-off object. Then this image acts as the object for the eyepiece lens which finally magnifies it and makes it easy for the human eye to observe.
Given that power of lens 1, ${{P}_{1}}=0.5D$ and power of lens 2, ${{P}_{2}}=20D$
The power of a lens $\left( P \right)$ and its focal length $\left( f \right)$ are related as:

& \Rightarrow f=\dfrac{1}{P} \\

where focal length is in meters.
Thus, focal length of lens 1, ${{f}_{1}}=\dfrac{1}{0.5}=2m$

The length of tube, $L$ of telescope is equal to the sum of the two focal lengths of the objective lens and the eyepiece lens.

For a convex lens to act as magnifying devices, the object to be observed should be kept within the focal length of the convex lens. All the objects lying outside the range of the focal length would be very blurry. Hence, a simple convex lens cannot be used to see the far away celestial bodies in a magnified manner and we need a telescope consisting of an arrangement of two convex lenses to observe such objects.
