Hint: Hanking in the year 1891 performed an experiment in which he could have a specific nuclear structure all through spermatogenesis in a few insects and he observed that 50 percent of sperm received this structure and the other 50 percent of the sperm did not receive this structure. Hanking gave that structure a name but could not explain his significance.
Step by step answer:Option -A- X-body
Hanking after his experiment with results named that nuclear structure which he finds in 50 percent of
the sperm X-body because it looked X-shaped to him. Later this X-body was found to be the chromosome that it was named X-chromosome I.e. sex chromosome.
Option -B- Autosome
Firstly these are the set of chromosomes other than sex chromosomes and Hanking didn’t talk about
this chromosome in his experiment.
Option -C- Y-chromosome
After an experiment of Hanking further investigations lead to a result that many other mammals and
some insects have a counter of X-chromosome in them which is present only in males and is smaller
than X-chromosome. Further, it was named Y-chromosome and is found in males as sex chromosomes.
Option -D- Nucleolus
It was not identified by Hanking in his experiment. It was recognized by bright-field microscopy back in
the 1830s. It is a large very distinct structure present in the eukaryotic nucleus. It is known for its
function of ribosome biogenesis.
Option -E- Polar body
These are very small haploid cells that are formed during oogenesis along with the ovum but they lack the ability of fertilization.
So, the correct answer to this question is an option” A” X-body.
Note: The X-body which was identified by Hanking was later determined to be X-chromosome which is known as a sex chromosome and if present in pair as XX it produces female and if present along with Y- chromosome as XY it produces female.
