The Government of India passed the Environment Protection Act in 1986 in the wake of the Bhopal Disaster. The Environment Protection Act was passed by the Government of India in March 1986 and it came to force in November 1986.

The Environment Protection Act comprises 26 sections nad 4 chapters under article 253. The main purpose of the Environment Protection Act is to proceed with the decisions of the UN Conference on the topic of the Human Environment.

First of all, in Stockholm, the United Nations conference was held to make decisions on Human Environment, in June 1972. Some many countries participated in that conference. India is one of the countries that participated in that conference.

Some of the decisions include improvement and protection of the environment, prevention of the environment from man-made hazards, protection of the environment, prevention of human-environment from other living organisms such as plants, animals, and property.

The Environment Protection Act was implemented based on the industrial tragedy in Bhopal, which is the Bhopal Gas tragedy considered as the worst industrial tragedy to occur in India.

Some of the areas are restricted in India from this act which includes Aravalli Region in Alwar, Doon valley in Uttarakhand, some coastal areas, Rajasthan, and ecologically sensitive zones, etc..,
