Out of all the committees of the constituent assembly, the most important committee was the Drafting Committee which was set up on the date of August 29, 1947. It was the committee which was entrusted with the task of preparing a draft of the new Constitution.

The Drafting Committee after taking into consideration the proposal of the several committees had prepared the first draught of the Indian Constitution, that was published during February 1948.
The people of India were given around eight months to discuss the draft and propose amendments. In the light of the public comments, criticisms as well as suggestions, the Drafting Committee had prepared the second draft, that was published during October 1948. The Drafting Committee took around less than six months to prepare its draft in all it only for 141 days.

Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar had introduced the final draft of the Constitution in the Assembly on the date of November 4, 1948(1st reading). The assembly had general discussion on it for five days. The second reading started on the date of November 15, 1948 and ended on the date of October 17, 1949. During this stage,around 7653 amendments were proposed and 2473 were actually discussed in the Assembly.
The third reading of the draft started on the date of November 14, 1949. Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar moved a motion-'the Constitution as stated by the assembly be passed'.

The motion of the Draft Constitution was declared and passed on November 26, 1949 and received the signature of the member as well as the president. Out of a total of 299 members of the assembly, only 284 were actually present on that day and signed the Constitution. The same date is mentioned in the Preamble as the date on which the people of India in the Constituent Assembly adopted, enacted and gave themselves this Constitution.
