We can also use Charcoal and anthracite as fuel and reductant. Pig iron is formed by smelting of iron ore in blast furnaces or by the process of smelting ilmenite carried out in electric furnaces.

We have to know that the term “pig iron” indicates the period when hot metal was cast into ingots before being indicted to the steel plant. The moulds were placed out in beds of sand such that they can be fed from a common runner. The collection of moulds looks similar to a litter of sucking pigs, the ingots known as “pigs” and the runner the “sow.”
We have to know that Pig iron is an intermediate product of the iron industry in the steel production. It is otherwise called crude iron. Pig iron is produced by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. Note: In simple words, the chemical state of iron in which iron exists when tapped from a blast furnace without any refinement (or) alloying is pig iron. Cast iron, wrought iron and steel could be obtained by the conversion of pig iron. Gray iron could be produced from pig iron. It also helps in producing ductile iron.
