Hint: Starch is a polysaccharide and polysaccharides are actually the Polymers or the Chains of monosaccharides. These are macromolecules.
(polysaccharides are threads, literally like a cotton thread containing different monosaccharides as the building blocks and these are the branched or unbranched).
Complete answer:
Let us first understand what actually is starch.
Starch is manufactured(that means it is produced) in the green leaves of plants from excess glucose which is produced during Photosynthesis and serves the plant as a reserve food supply (reserve Food Supply here means that is stored for the time of emergency). Starch is stored in the chloroplasts (which are the photosynthetic organisms of the plant) in the form of granules and in the storage organs such as the roots of the cassava plant; the tuber of the potato and the seeds of corn, wheat, and rice. When required, starch is broken down, in the presence of certain enzymes and water, into its constituent monomer glucose units, and that glucose unit diffuses from the cells to nourish the plant tissues.
Chemically starch forms a helical structure that is the chain of glucose molecules folded in the form of a helix. Starch gives a characteristic blue colour with Iodine molecules due to the ability of the letter to occupy a position in the interior of a helical coil of glucose unit. (this is also known as the iodine test for starch).
Now let's check the other options as well :
Option B is fructose. Fructose is actually the isomer of glucose, but it has no role in the chemical composition of starch.
Option C is maltose. Maltose is a type of disaccharide composed of glucose and glucose.
Option D is sucrose. Sucrose is a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose.
Hence the correct answer is Option ‘A’.
Note: In biomolecules, when we discuss the food storing polysaccharides there are two names glycogen and starch. Starch is found in plants and glycogen is the animal starch. Glycogen is the storage form of carbohydrate in animals.
