Hint: A sound is a form of energy that is produced and transmitted by vibrating matter. Sound travels as waves. The sound is produced because of three main elements. They are the transmitter, the transmission medium, and the receiver.
Vibration: When sound moves through matter such as solid, liquid, and gas, the molecules of the matter move to and fro in the direction in which a wave is traveling. This movement is called vibration.

As sound waves travel, molecules are pressed together in some parts called compression, and in some parts, they are spread out called rarefaction. When many molecules vibrate with much force, it results in a loud sound. When fewer molecules vibrate with less force, it results in soft sound.
When an object vibrates, it makes the nearing air molecules vibrate and the processes go on. When a tightly stretched band is plucked, it produces sound. When it stops vibrating, it does not produce sound.
When a force is applied on an atom, it moves from its original position and exerts a force on an adjacent atom. This motion from one particle to another continues throughout the medium. In this type, the sound is transmitted through a medium.
As the sound wave strikes the eardrum, it vibrates and the vibration reaches the inner ear which sends signals to the brain. The brain interprets the signals and we hear the sound.

Sound travels the slowest through gases because the molecules of a gas are farthest apart. In a vacuum, sound cannot travel because there is no matter for it to move through.
