Hint:The Deccan Plateau is a large plateau which is a major part of India’s geography. The area of the plateau covers 422,000 square kilometres and is 43% India’s landmass.

Complete answer:The Deccan Plateau is triangular in shape and it lies in western and southern India. It passes through almost eight indian states Telangana,Maharashtra,Karnataka,Tamil Nadu and Kerala.Between the two mountain ranges of the eastern and western ghats lie the plateau.
The name Deccan came from the Sanskrit word ‘dakkina or dakshana’ which means South. The elevation of the plateau is almost 500 metres and is composed of balck volcanic basalt salt. These were laid down during the massive Deccan Traps erosion. The area of the Deccan Plateau underwent several volcanic eruptions which resulted in solidification of the molten lava. Layers after layers were formed were accumulated and after the extinction of those volcanoes, there were stretches of flat lands like that of a table. Hence these lands came to be known as ‘tablelands’. The Deccan region is home to many populations who speak a variety of languages. The Gonds and Bhil tribes live in the areas of the northern and northeastern edges of the plateau.Various grazing animals like the four-horned antelopes and black bucks are found.

Note: The Deccan region is very rich in terms of minerals. The major ores that are found are that of mica and iron ore in the Chota nagpur region. Gold and diamonds and other metals are also found.
