Hint: In this question, we have to round off the given number, so we must know what rounding off actually is and why it is done. While rounding off we modify the number before that decimal place according to the digit at the decimal place. If the digit at the decimal place is greater than $5$ , then we increase the digit before the decimal place by $1$ and if the digit at the decimal place is smaller than $5$ then the digit before that decimal place remains the same. For example, let a number be $1567$ that has to be rounded off to ones place, so $7$ is the digit at the decimal place, we see that the number at the decimal place is greater than $5$ , so we increase the digit before the decimal place that is $6$ , by $1$ and replace $7$ by $0$ . So, $1567$ when rounded off to ones place is equal to $1570$ . Using this definition, we can round off the given number easily.
Complete step by step answer:
We have to round off the number $1200$ to the nearest thousand that is we have to convert the ones, tens and hundreds place to zero.
The digits at the ones and tens place are already zero, so we have to convert only hundreds place to zero. The digit at the hundreds place is $2$ that is smaller than $5$ so the digit before the decimal place remains the same and $2$ is replaced by $0$ .
Note: Before, rounding off a number we have to find the decimal place up to which we have to round off a number. We drop the values after that decimal place, that is, they are occupied by zero. We round off a number to express it more conveniently, it is done to make the calculations easier.
