What is respiration? How is it different from breathing?
Hint: One of the chemical and mechanical processes is used to carry oxygen to every cell in the body and to get rid of carbon dioxide, while the other process releases energy in a regulated and step-wise manner.
Respiration is the process of glucose breakdown to produce energy which is then used by cells to perform the cellular function.
The process involves inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
Respiration occurs in cells.
Breathing occurs in the lungs and also includes the nose, mouth, and pharynx
An involuntary chemical process.
Breathing is both a voluntary physical mechanism and an involuntary process. (Breathing during sleep is involuntary whereas voluntary breathing is observed while singing, talking, swimming, or calming).
Generally, energy is generated and released in the ATP form.
In this process, no production of energy.
It is called the intracellular process, as it occurs or happens within cells.
It is called the extracellular phase, as it happens outside the cells. (the occurrence between organism and outside environment).
During the process, a significant number of enzymes are used.
There are no enzymes used during the process.
In cells and cell organelles, including mitochondria, respiration occurs.
Breathing occurs through respiratory passages, such as the nose, lungs, etc.
Additional information: The respiration process is accomplished in 4 steps such as Breathing or Ventilation, gaseous exchange, transfer of gases, and cell respiration. Breathing is thorax movement, expansion (inflation) and lung contraction, and the passage of air into and out of the lungs. It's an extracellular, physical, and energy-consuming mechanism. The respiration process is the sum of inspiration and expiration. There are 2 breathing steps: > Inspiration is an active process of fresh air absorption from outside into the lungs. During the later part of the respiration, blood pressure increases. > The expiration process is considered as the outflow of air from the lungs. The inspiratory muscles relax as expiration occurs. Elasticity helps in the dome moving superiorly as the external intercostal relaxes, ribs move inferiorly, and as the diaphragm loosens.
Note: Breathing is a physical phenomenon that differs in various organisms and is limited only to some organs, whereas Respiratory is a common biochemical process in all species. It exists in any living body cell.
