Hint: In this question use this concept that in magnetism the repulsion phenomenon occurs only when two like poles of a magnet exist while the phenomenon attraction can exist in presence of magnetic material too.
Complete step-by-step answer:
Magnet is an object which produces magnetic fields and attracts the unlike poles and repelling like poles and magnetism is a physical phenomena arising from the force caused by magnets or objects that produce fields that attract or repel other objects.
Repulsion is the sure test for magnetism because it occurs only when two like poles of a magnet exist while the attraction phenomenon can occur between two unlike poles of a magnet and also between a magnet and a magnetic material means if there are two magnets they will attract each other and suppose if one material is magnet and other is iron then they will also attract each other so in that case we cannot decide which is a magnet.
One common application of the attractive property of magnets is the segregation of useful magnetic substances like iron and steel from the wastes by magnetic separation method.
Note: There are three types of magnets first is permanent magnets which do not lose their magnetic property once they are magnetized, second one is temporary magnets which are magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field, once the magnetic field is removed they lose their magnetic property and third one is electromagnets which consists of a coil of wire wrapped around the iron metal core and when this material is exposed to the electric current the magnetic field is produced.
