Hint: In order to solve this question we need to understand sound waves. Sound waves are the longitudinal waves which propagate in a medium with compression and rarefaction. Actually whenever someone produces a wave through their musical instruments or mouth then it creates vibration in surrounding air forcing atoms of the atmosphere to vibrate, which while vibrating strikes the other neighboring atoms which in turn strikes next and this way it propagates in medium. However sound waves speed depends on the medium it travels and also sound waves could not propagate in vacuum because of the unavailability of atoms in surrounding air.

Complete answer:
First we would discuss a brief hearing mechanism. So sound waves enter from outside first enter the outer ear and travel through the external auditory canal until they reach membrane or ear drums forcing it to vibrate and after a little processing it stimulates sensory cells to send the nerve impulses to the brain and then our brain stores this pattern in the memory.

Hence when this pattern reappears then it identifies the same pattern and tells us that this sound is the same and it of that particular object. For below the age of five or eardrums are actually very soft thin membranes and they can persist larger vibrations so it is recommended to hear sound waves ranging from $25Hz$ to $25000Hz$ frequency of sound waves.

Note: It should be remembered that sound waves travels in medium with compression and rarefaction so if this compression and rarefaction is frequent means of high frequency then it could damage eardrums as they have a certain limit but in modern world this sound limit extended and creates noise pollution which not only harms human but animals too.
