The pus is whitish, yellowish, brownish, or a little lighter in color containing a large amount of protein in its fluid. They are accumulated at the site of the infection and are called liquor puris. They are made up of the white blood cells that are dead after fighting the infections as a response by the immunity system of the body towards any infection. When any infection the white blood cells move into the infectious part through the walls of the blood vessels and then the pus formation starts. Pus also consists of various other dead matters that include white blood cells along with dead tissue, cells, bacteria, or fungus, etc.
The pus formation is said to be a good sign as it shows that the immune system of our body is responding to the infection but it may make the infection worse if not given the proper medical attention. They may sometimes become green or yellow and may smell bad when they are accumulated for a longer time. There are various antibiotics that are taken to cure the pus. While cleaning the pus be very sure not to touch it with other parts of the body as it may cause infection and dispose of the pieces of cotton used for cleaning the pus very carefully.

The pus is generally found to be acidic but sometimes it may be basic or even neutral. It is considered to be the garbage of the body. In the year 1869, Swiss biologist Friedrich Miescher was the first to discover the nucleic acids in the pus cells.
