The preamble of India was adopted on 26th November 1949. It seeks to convey the nature of the Indian state along with its objectives.

Complete step by step answer: The preamble can be simply explained as ‘the summary’ of any constitution. Its main feature is that it conveys the essence of the constitution. NA Palkhivala (eminent jurist) called the preamble as “the identity card of the constitution”. Preamble not only signifies what the country stands for but also incorporates the basic philosophy and fundamental values. These values include multiple spheres- political, social, moral and religious. It contains the noble and strategic vision of the constituent assembly and reflects the goals and aspirations of the founding leaders. Sir Ernest Barker (political scientist) defined the preamble as the ‘key-note’ to any constitution. It provides a direction on which the government has to run and serve the citizens.

Note: The preamble of the Indian constitution is based on the “objective resolution” which was drafted by Jawaharlal Nehru. It specifies justice, liberty, equality and fraternity as its prior objectives. It was amended in 1976 by the 42nd constitutional amendment act and three words were added. These were ‘socialist’, ‘secular’ and ‘integrity’.
