It was founded by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai November 11, 1947, in the M. G. Science College, Ahmedabad, with support from the Karmakshetra Educational Foundation and the Ahmedabad Education Society. In the beginning, at PRL, research was done on Cosmic Rays and the properties of the Upper Atmosphere. Later, research in Theoretical Physics and Radio Physics was added with grants from the Atomic Energy Commission.
The Physical Research Laboratory carries out various seminars and public lectures throughout the year. It has a workshop, computer center, library, and various other laboratory facilities.
