Many historians and scholars have pointed out that the hatred among the settlers towards the Native Americans, corruption and oppressiveness of the government of Governor Berkeley and the constant threat of attacks by Native Americans on the frontier were some of the most prominent reasons for the start of the rebellion. Against Berkeley's orders, the rebels struck south until they met and convinced the Occaneechi warriors to leave and attack the Susquehannock, the rebels murdered most of the Occaneechi men, women, and children remaining at the village. After months of conflict, Bacon's forces moved to Jamestown, the Colonial capital, burned it to the ground and gained control over the colony.
Bacon died of dysentery a month later and the rebellion started to fall apart. After his death, Governor Berkeley came back to power and seized the property of rebels and executed 23 men. After this rebel, the king of England decided to give the Governor more power, taxes were reduced and racial lines were hardened associated with slavery as a way to control the poor.
The Indian Reservation system in 1677 was introduced due to the notion that Indians and whites cannot live together peacefully.
