HintMau-Mau Uprising occurred between 1952-1960. It is also known as Mau-Mau Rebellion, Kenya emergency, and Mau-Mau revolt.

Complete step-by-step solutionThe Mau-Mau Movement was a war in the British Kenya Colony (1920-1963) between the Kenya land and freedom army which was also known as Mau-Mau and British authorities. The Mau-Mau people were against the British domination in Kenya and hence they did a violent resistance. The movement was especially associated with the ritual oath taken by the Kikuyu Central Association to promote unity in this movement of Independence.
In 1950, the British government banned the Mau-Mau, and in October 1952 British started a campaign to sabotage the Mau-Mau and assassinate attributed to Mau-Mau terrorists. After that, the British-Kenya government declared a state of emergency and they continuously did military operations against Kikuyu rebels for four years. At the end of 1956, more than 11,000 rebels were killed while fighting against the British. About 100 Europeans and 2,000 African loyalists were also killed. Almost 20,000 other Kikuyu people were sent to detention centers, where they used to be tortured by the British and also they were doing intensive efforts to change the view of Kikuyus towards the government and they were also forced to abandon their nationalist aspirations. The British did so much effort but after 10 years Kenya got its independence and Jomo Kenyatta became the first prime minister.

Note In 2003, the Kenya government lifted the ban on Mau-Mau. Nairobi is the capital of Kenya while its oldest city and first capital were Mombasa.
