There are around 600 Asiatic lions left in the Gir Forest of Western India, their final and last remaining natural habitat. Since the turn of the twentieth century, its reach is confined to Gir National Park and the encompassing territories in the Indian territory of Gujarat.

Gir forest, otherwise called Sasan Gir. It is a backwoods and wildlife sanctuary close to Talala Gir in Gujarat, India. It was set up in 1965, with a complete region of 1,412 km2 (545 sq mi), of which 258 km2 (100 sq mi) is completely secured as a public park and 1,153 km2 (445 sq mi) as an untamed life safe-haven. It is important for the Khatar-For dry deciduous backwoods ecoregion. The population has consistently increased since 2010. In May 2015, the fourteenth Asiatic Lion Census was led over a region of around 20,000 km2 (7,700 sq mi).
