Hint: The endometrium is the innermost layer of the uterus. It is the organ that is hollow and muscular and it is located in the female pelvic region between the rectum and the bladder. The uterus serves as the site for the implantation of the fertilized egg.
Complete answer: The uterus has three linings. These three linings are perimetrium, myometrium and endometrium. The perimetrium is the outer layer, the myometrium is the middle layer. made up of smooth muscle fibres, and the endometrium is the last and the innermost layer of the uterus. It is a highly vascularized layer and it consists of various glands. The endometrium is the site of the implantation. It undergoes cyclic changes every month to prepare itself for implantation. When fertilization occurs, the endometrium becomes thick and cushioned to provide a soft bed for the implantation of the egg. It nourishes the developing embryo then. In case there is no fertilization, the endometrium ruptures and comes out during menstruation. The rupture of the endometrium causes blood flow during menstruation. Apart from that, the endometrium also prevents the adhesions between the opposite walls of the myometrium layer.
Note: The uterus is also known as the womb or the hysteria. It is a large, hollow, highly vascularized, muscular structure. The uterus is in the shape of an inverted pear. The uterus is suspended by the mesometrium or the mesentery. Uterus has three different parts, namely, Fundus, Corpus, and Cervix.
