Complete answer: IUD is one of the long term reversible birth control methods. It is a small coil or a “T” shaped birth control device which is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Types of intrauterine devices are as follows:
a) Nonhormonal: These are copper-containing IUDs.
b) Hormonal: These are progestin releasing IUD.
c)Copper-based IUD- These are T-shaped frame devices on which pure electrolytic copper wire is wound around. The T arms of the frame hold the IUD near the top of the uterus. They damage sperms and disrupt the mobility which prevents them from fertilising the egg. The copper acts as a spermicide. The copper can prevent the implantation of the fertilised egg. The copper IUD has an advantage to
i. It provides emergency contraception upto five days after unprotected sex.
ii. It is not hormonal based so it can be used while breastfeeding.

Note: Intrauterine devices do not lead to infertility. It does not cause increased infection and does not allow space for bacteria to grow and spread in the copper wire. It may lead to increased risk immediately after insertion. The mechanism of copper intrauterine devices is to prevent ovulation.
