Hint: Fishes that are often found in freshwater are referred to as freshwater fish. It means, they can swim in the rivers, wetlands and lakes that make up less than 3 per cent of the earth’s water supply.

Complete answer:
The most common freshwater fish you might have heard about are rohu and Catla.
Now, let’s point out some characteristics about rohu:
It is a herbivorous and bottom feeder. It basically feeds on algae and aquatic plants present inside the freshwater lakes, ponds, rivers etc. It breathes with help of gills and also frequently comes to water surfaces for intake of air into the air bladder.
It is an oviparous fish, which means they produce eggs from which the young ones arrive. Their breeding occurs in running water in July and August. fertilisation is an external example by means of water.

Now, we will study Catla:
The mouth of Catla fish is slightly upward. They majorly feed on the surface of the water. Apart from this, they mainly pick and eat small food particles only. They can't afford to eat the aquatic weed. They cannot eat food from the bottom. The food is phytoplankton and zooplanktons. They are found in the rivers of Bangladesh.

Note: Catla has an upturned month with infringed lips while rohu has a ventrally pointed mouth with fringed lips. But both of them possess a terminal mouth with slightly fringed lower lip. The hybrid also possesses a pair of maxillary barbels but shorter and not as prominent as a rohu.
