Hint: Moll’s experiment or also called as moll’s half leaf experiment is done on plants to check or experiment about the photosynthesis process. $KOH$ is important in the demonstration of this experiment.
Complete answer:
Moll’s half leaf experiment was performed to state that plants cannot perform the process of photosynthesis in unavailability of the carbon dioxide gas. It states that plants use sunlight and carbon dioxide present in the air to produce food for itself and when any one is not available the photosynthesis process is affected largely.
Option A- Unequal transpiration from two surfaces of leaf: This is another experiment that states that two surfaces of a leaf perform unequal transpiration that is because on the lower surface of the leaf there are larger number present as compare with upper surface due to this reason the process of transpiration occur more in the lower surface of the leaf. This is not Moll’s experiment.
Option B- $C{O_2}$ is essential for photosynthesis: Moll’s experiment shows that $C{O_2}$ is important for the process of photosynthesis. He showed this by performing an experiment with half leaf dipped in $KOH$ and another part exposed in the air, this experiment helped him to know about $C{O_2}$ importance in photosynthesis process.
Option C- Relation between transpiration and absorption: Relation between transpiration and absorption is not stated by Moll’s experiment.
Option D- Chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis: Importance of chlorophyll is that it helps plants in getting energy from the sun and this energy helps plants to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose form. This is not proved by Moll’s experiment.
So our correct answer is Option B- Carbon dioxide is essential for photosynthesis.
Note: The Moll’s experiment is performed by a single leaf also. Dip a part of the leaf of a destarched plant into a tube containing $KOH$ and place in sunlight for some time. Then the leaf is tested for starch. The part of leaf that was dipped into $KOH$ solution doesn’t test positive for Starch because $C{O_2}$ in the bottle was taken by KOH and bottle was corked to prevent entry of air, this shows importance of $C{O_2}$ for photosynthesis.
