The decline of plant and animal species also results in the loss of biodiversity and this loss can either be reversible or irreversible. Human activities have been the key cause of the loss of biodiversity, resulting in abrupt climate changes that have posed a significant threat to biodiversity. Increased requirement for natural resources, along with a rising population, has also led to increased generation of waste.
Following are some of the major causes that have resulted in the loss of biodiversity:
Habitat loss – The ecosystem's natural environment plays a significant role in preserving ecological balance. Each year, many trees are cut down to meet human demands for the construction of factories, highways, villages, etc. As a consequence, the species are the victims of predation and inevitably die.
Over-exploitation – For food and shelter, humans have always relied on nature. The significant explanation for the over-exploitation of available capital is the growing population. Many other marine fish stocks around the world are currently over-harvested, threatening the continued survival of many species of commercial importance.
Alien species invasion – Some of them become violent and cause the extinction of local species when foreign species are introduced by chance or intentionally. The introduction of the Nile perch into Lake Victoria in East Africa eventually contributed to the extinction of more than 200 species of cichlid fishes in the lake, a naturally unique group.
