Hint: Flora and fauna are words deriving from Latin. Flora in Latin signifies the goddess of the flower. Flora is also derivative from the word floral, which signifies connecting to flowers. Hence, flora is a collection of native plants in an ecosystem of a geographical area. The derivation of the word fauna is a bit cloaked in obscurity. Rendering to Roman mythology, Fauna denotes the goddess of fertility. Fauna is occasionally denoted as Fauns, signifying forest spirits. By description, fauna is a collection of native animals of any geographical area.

Complete answer:
The following steps are taken by the government to protect the flora and fauna of the country: (i) Wildlife Protection Act was accomplished in 1972 in India. (ii) 14 biosphere reserves have been set up in the nation to guard flora and fauna. 4 out of these - Sundarbans in West Bengal, Nanda Devi in Uttarakhand, the Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu and the Nilgiris - have been comprised in the world grid of biosphere preserves. (iii) Monetary and technical aid has been offered to numerous botanical gardens by the government since 1992. (iv) Project Tiger, Project Rhino, Project Great Indian Bustard and numerous additional eco-developmental schemes have been announced. (v) Overall 89 national gardens, 490 wildlife preserves and zoological parks are set up to take care of innate legacy.

Note: Without flora and fauna, humans cannot survive. The flora produces and discharges oxygen, which is required by the fauna for respirational intents. In return, the fauna generates and discharges carbon dioxide, which is required by the flora for photosynthesis.
