Railways have arisen today as the primary vehicle for socio-economic growth of the country. It not only functions as a mode of transport but also creates huge employment chances.

The problems faced by the Indian Railways are:

-Indian Railways have been in the news albeit for wrong reasons. With the abrupt increase in passenger and goods traffic, the frequency of train accidents have increased. This has put forward serious questions regarding safety in the public mind and the general health of the railway network.

-Indian Railways have to play a double role of revenue earning as well as fulfilling the social obligations. The Expert Group, constituted in December 1998 termed it as the ‘split personality’. This is because the Railways are seen as a commercial organisation on one hand and it is treated as a social organisation on the other hand. The two purposes are diametrically contrary and difficult to reconcile.

-A large number of problems involves late running of trains, absence of passenger facilities comprising cleanliness at the railway stations, deficit security arrangement on the railways arising in theft and dacoities. Political stress and interference is a very big issue which the Indian Railways are facing with increasing effect. Several projects which are not economically achievable have been initiated for political appreciations.
