Hint:Megaphone is a funnel shape instrument which is used to amplify sound. It is similar to that of a loudspeaker. The funnel-like shape of the megaphone helps in amplifying the sound and sends the sound in a particular direction.
Complete answer:
Let us first understand what a megaphone is.Megaphone is a funnel shaped instrument which is used to amplify sound. You may have seen in rallies or some public speeches, people using a megaphone to make their voice sound louder. One can think of a megaphone as a loudspeaker.
We know that sound is a wave. Waves have a property of reflecting at the surface or when there is a change in medium (similar to light). Therefore, sound waves also reflect when they hit an obstacle and this is the reason why we can hear our own voice. The sounds waves from our mouth hit the surrounding obstacles and get reflected. These reflected waves then enter our ears.
A megaphone works on the principle of multiple reflection of sound waves. We already know that a megaphone is in the shape of a funnel. As a result, when sound is produced in a megaphone, the waves are reflected multiple times and travel in a path leading to the opening of the funnel. Due to this, the amplitude of the sound increases and they travel in a specific direction.
Note:Actually, a megaphone is based on the principle of superposition of waves too. When two or more waves superimpose, a new wave is formed. The amplitude of the resultant wave may be greater than the initial waves. This is how the sound is amplified with a megaphone.
