The inner ear is the innermost part of the ear. The vestibulocochlear organs are present in the inner ear. The inner ear has two parts namely a bony labyrinth and a membranous labyrinth. The bony labyrinth is nothing but a sequence of bony cavities that constitutes cochlea, vestibules, and three semi-circular canals.
The semi-circular canal is interconnected tubes located inside each ear. They are lined with cilia and filled with a fluid known as endolymph. With every movement of the head, the endolymph moves the cilia. The osseous labyrinth's central part is known as the vestibule and it responds to gravity and movements of the head. The cochlea is the auditory portion of the inner ear. It is a spiral-shaped cavity present in the bony labyrinth.
In the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear, a fluid, endolymph is present. It lies within the bony labyrinth and is surrounded by perilymph. Within the cochlea the extracellular fluid perilymph is present. The major component in perilymph is sodium.
