- Guard cells: These cells guard the opening and closing of the stomatal aperture. They have chloroplasts and regulate stomatal movement. They are usually bean or kidney-shaped but in grasses, these are dumb-bell shaped. Walls of the guard cells surrounding the stomatal aperture are called the inner walls and the ones away from the aperture are called the outer walls. The outer walls are thin whereas the inner walls are extremely thickened. Dumb-bell shaped guard cells only have thickenings limited to the middle part of the cell.
- Lenticel: It is a small portion of the periderm which is an outcome of the active phellogen. Phellogen (cork cambium) is a meristematic tissue that is developed during the secondary growth of the plant and produces suberized cork cells on the outer side.
- Subsidiary cells: These cells are specialized epidermal cells. In some flowering plants, when the cells surrounding the guard cells become specialized in their shape and size, it gives rise to these subsidiary cells. These cells are also referred to as accessory cells and provide support to the guard cells. They do not have any chloroplasts or perform photosynthetic functions.
