Hint: The east coast of India has one more major port than the west coast. Most of them are also important and populated port cities.

Complete Answer:
India has a total of 13 major ports on its extensive coastline. These ports are very important to the economy and trade of the country. Around 70 per cent by value and 95 per cent by volume of India's trade is done through transport overseas and oceans. Ports maritime trade was an intrinsic part of the economy of India from very early times. Today, along with the 13 major ports, India also has a staggering number of minor ports.

Let us now see how many ports are located on the east coast-
A. There are six major ports located on the west coast of India. Therefore, this is not the correct answer.

B. The east coast of India has seven major ports. So, this is the correct answer.

C. Three is much less than the number of ports on the east coast. In fact, the state of Tamil Nadu itself has three major coasts. So, this is not the correct answer.

D. Five is also less than the actual number of ports on the east coast. Therefore, this too is not the correct answer.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option B.

Note:
- The west coast has more ports than the east coast in general, but has one less major port than the east coast.
- The major ports on the east coast are Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), Ennore (Tamil Nadu), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Haldia & Kolkata (West Bengal), Paradip (Odisha), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Island).
- The major ports on the west coast are Kochi (Kerala), Kandla (Gujarat), Mangalore (Karnataka), Mormugao (Goa), Mumbai (Maharashtra) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Maharashtra).
- India also has 186 minor ports which are notified.
