An orbit known to be a regular and repeating path that an object in space takes around another one. The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system with the Sun and the objects that orbits it, either directly or indirectly. The objects that orbit the Sun directly are the largest eight planets, with the rest being smaller objects, the dwarf planets and small Solar system bodies. The objects that orbit the Sun indirectly are the natural satellite among which two are larger than the smallest planet, Mercury.

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, The four smaller inner planets, being primarily composed of rock and metal, are called terrestrial planets. The four outer planets, being more massive than the terrestrials are called giant planets. Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets, are the gas giants, being composed mainly of hydrogen and helium the two outermost planets, Uranus and Neptune, being composed mostly of substances with relatively high melting points are the Ice giants.

Compared with hydrogen and helium, such as water, ammonia and methane, called volatiles. All eight planets have almost a circular orbit that lies within approximately a flat disc called the ecliptic. The Solar System also contains smaller objects such as the asteroid belt, lying between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter which mostly contains objects composed of rock and metal, like the terrestrial planets.

Note:Jupiter’s gravitational pull is so strong that asteroids would have been destabilized, they would have been thrown out of orbit and pushed inwards towards the Sun or outwards into the outer solar system. Whatever was left would have been slowly pulled together creating gaps in the belt called Kirkwood gaps which prevents a planet from ever forming.
