The word India has been derived from the river ‘Indus’ which was worshipped by the Aryans and they named it as ‘Sindhu’. The Persian aliens called it ‘Hindu’ and was finally named ‘Hindustan’ which is a combined name of Sindhu and Hindu and is considered the land of Hindus.
India is known to have the largest democracy and is the 7th largest country in the world. Regarding its geographical structure – India is bounded by the Great Himalayas in the north which stretches to the south and at the Tropic of Cancer. It falls into the Indian Ocean which is between the Bay of Bengal in the east and Arabian Sea in the west. Some of the significant facts about India are:
India was considered to be one of the richest countries till the time of the British rule in the 17th century and was popularly known as the ‘Golden Bird’. It was the only source of diamond in the world until 1896.
The world’s first university was established in India, i.e. Takshila in 700 B.C. before the separation of Pakistan and India, now it is in Pakistan.
India is the main origin of Yoga which existed over 5000 years.
India is the first country which created Martial Arts which was later spread by the Buddhist missionaries.
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh in India is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world where Lord Buddha visited in 500 B.C.
Angkor Wat, a Hindu temple in Cambodia is the largest religious building in the world built in the 11th century.
