Kinetic energy can also be defined in the terms of work. As it is the work which is required to accelerate a body of given mass ‘m’ from its resting position to the given position or we can say that from rest to given velocity. Kinetic energy is dependent on both mass and speed. Changing the value of one or both will result in the change of kinetic energy. The expression for kinetic energy is given as- $\dfrac{1}{2}m{{v}^{2}}$ where ‘m’ is mass of the body and ‘v’ is the speed of the object. It is produced by the movement of the body. It increases with speed. It is higher if the mass of the body that produces it is greater. It increases as mass and speed are increased.

The SI unit of energy is Joule. Another convenient unit of energy is electron volt(eV) which is the kinetic energy gained or lost by an electron in moving through a potential difference of one volt.
