The word dah means dus or Ten. The Dahsala system was introduced by Mugal emperor Akbar. Akbar is known for hill liberal policies, efficient administration and progressive approach.
The Dahsala system was the idea of Akbar’s finance minister Todarmal. The survey was done for different cops about the average production in ten years and the average cost of the crops in ten years under this system.
The tax on the various crops was fixed on the basis of the survey which is done for introducing the dahsala system. Under this system the clear measurement units for the land were evolved. Gaz-i-illahi was introduced as the new unit of land measurement.
Land was divided in various categories depending on whether the land is cultivable or not. Banjar lands were not charged for the tax under this system.
