In India the state which is famous for peanut cultivation in Gujarat. In India, peanuts are grown mostly in five states. These five states are Andhra Pradesh, Gujrat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra. These five states account for about 90% of the total area of crops.

Out of these 90%, Gujrat ranks the highest production 27-30% of peanut production. The second rank is accompanied by Andhra Pradesh which accounts for 24% of the total production. Tamil Nadu produces only 14-15% of peanut whereas the peanut production is only 10-12% in Karnataka and so Kanata racks lowest.

Peanut or groundnut belongs to the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae. As any ether legumes, peanuts have system association with nitrogen fixing bacteria. The peanuts are borne on the axial dusters on the stem above the grouse. Their life span is very short as they last for only one day some environmental factors on which the peanut produce depend are adequate and well distributed rainfall.

Peanuts can be best green in areas that receive 600-1500 mm of rainfall. Peanuts grow best in sandy or loamy soil and in presence of light. The pH of soil should be 5.9-7 for peanuts. Production peanuts benefit little or not at all from fertilizers.

Note: Peanuts are grown in a well - drained sandy or sandy clay loamy soil. The pH of the soil should be around 6.5 to 7.0 and the optimum soil temperature is around 30 degrees celsius. They are planted in the month of April, May and June as they need to grow in warm weather.
