Note: A botanist Philibert Commercon who traveled with the French navy admiral Louis Antoine de Bougainville was the first European to describe these plants. He observed this plant during his voyage of circumnavigation of the earth with the navy admiral and was named after him. The plant was first published in 1789 in the book Genera Plantarum as ‘Bougainvillea’. The plant genus was spelled differently for a while until the botanists found its suitable name which was ‘Bougainvillea' in the 1930s as is found in the Index Kewensis.
