Hint: Now we know that 1000m = 1km. hence we will first convert the data in Km using this conversion. Now once the units are the same we will add the length of two roads to find the total length of both roads.

Complete step by step answer:
Now the length of two roads are given to be 25km 500m and 30km 400m.
First let us consider the first road
The length of this road is 25km 500m
Now we know that 1000m = 1km. using this we will convert 500m into km
Now 500m = \[\dfrac{500}{1000}km\] = 0.5km
Hence Now 25km 500m = 25km + 0.5km = 25.5km.
Hence we get the length of first road is 25.5km……………………… (1)
First let us consider the second road
The length of this road is 30km 400m
Now we know that 1000m = 1km. using this we will convert 500m into km
Now 400m = \[\dfrac{400}{1000}km\] = 0.4km
Hence Now 30km 400m = 30km + 0.4km = 30.4km.
Hence we get the length of first road is 30.4km ………………………….. (2)
Now the total length of road is length of first road + length of second road.
Now from equation (1) and equation (2) we get.
Hence we get total length = 25.5 + 30.4.
\[\begin{align}
  & \text{ 25}\text{.5} \\
 & \text{ +30}\text{.4} \\
 & \text{ }\overline{\text{55}\text{.9}} \\
\end{align}\]

Hence we get the total length of the road is 55.9km

Note: Note that before adding make sure that the units are the same. We can also convert km into m. in this case for example 25 km = 25000m and hence 25km 400m = 25000 + 400 = 25400m.
But always make sure that the units are the same while adding any two terms.
