Human interference is also a big cause of their extinction. One such example of an endemic species that became extinct due to human involvement is dodo. It became extinct within a decade of human settlement in the area where they used to live. The main reasons involving the endangering of the endemic species include mining, surface extraction, slash and burn agriculture, urban settlement, and various agricultural activities. Endemism can be divided into two categories of paleo endemism and neo-endemism. Paleo endemism refers to the species which were once present in the larger area but are now present in the smaller area. Neo-endemism is the species which have recently arisen, it may be due to hybridization among themselves.
