Hint: Earth is the third planet from the Sun. 70% of earth is covered with water and only 30% of it is land. Earth has a surface area of 57,308,738 square kilometer.

Complete answer: Desert is a landform that is deficient in moisture. Places that receive less than 25 centimeter of rainfall per year are called deserts. Deserts are usually barren landscapes where rainfall is scarce and living conditions are harsh for both animals and plants.
Due to lack of humidity, deserts experience extreme temperatures. There are cold deserts and there are hot deserts. Hot deserts have high temperatures , extreme temperature differences, greater evaporation than rainfall, low cloud cover and strong winds. Cold deserts are found in higher latitudes and the aridity is caused by dryness in the air. The Sahara desert in Africa is the world’s largest hot desert. Polar deserts of Antarctica are the world's largest cold desert.
Deserts are sparsely populated areas . Deserts make up about 33% of earth’s land area. Polar deserts make up around 14.2 million square kilometer of earth’s area. Sahara desert covers around 3.3 square miles. Deserts hence make around one third of the world's total land area.

Note: One should note that the Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is located in southwestern part of the Indian subcontinent and is spread across the countries of Pakistan and India. India also has a cold desert region in Ladakh.
