Hint:The charge separation leads to the formation of the electric dipole in the compound. This charge separation is known as polarity. The word polarity indicates the ability to form poles that are the negative pole and positive pole. The atom or group which is more electronegative form a negative pole while the atom or group which is more positive form a positive pole.
Complete answer:As we know that polarity is the ability of charge separation it is determined using the electronegativity of the atoms. The atom or group which is electronegative pulls electrons toward itself and hence, carries a negative charge on it.While the group or atom which is electropositive carries a positive charge on it.In this way the separation of the charge in the molecule takes place, and we can say that the molecule is polar. Thus, based on the electronegativity of the atoms, we can say whether the molecule or compound is polar or not.In this way, we can find the polarity of the compound.
Note:Polarity is the physical property of the matter which also affects the other physical properties like solubility of the compound, the melting point of the compound, boiling point, etc.As the polarity of the molecule increases it leads to an increase in the intermolecular forces between the molecules and hence, physical properties like melting point and boiling point increase. In the determination of the bond polarity or molecular polarity, it is important to know the electronegativity of the atoms or groups. As we know that metals are electropositive while non-metal are electronegative.
