In 1882, when she was of 19 months of age, Helen Keller developed a febrile illness mysteriously that left her both blind and deaf. Historical biographies attribute the illness to rubella, scarlet fever, encephalitis, or meningitis and the analysis of her illness suggests she likely had bacterial meningitis, caused by Neisseria meningitidis or possibly Haemophilus influenzae.

A woman of great luminous intelligence, high ambition and great accomplishment, she was driven by her deep compassion towards others to devote her life in helping them overcome significant obstacles to living healthy and productive lives. She wrote about her life in several books, including The Story of My Life (1903), Optimism (1903), The World I Live In (1908), My Religion (1927) and Helen Keller’s Journal (1938). She was great at oratory which fetched her large audiences.On September 14, 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson ,the President then, awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the United States' two highest civilian honors.
