The wetland and the lake were formed by the main construction workers and the headworks that are situated across the Sutlej river in the year 1953. The headworks were located in the downstream of the confluence of the Beas river and the Sutlej rivers that are just south of the Harike village. This rich biodiversity of the present wetland plays a very important role in maintaining the precious hydrological sites and balance of this place. It consists of a vast concentration of migratory fauna and fauna of the waterfowls which include a number of species that are globally threatened.
