Hint: The matter exists in generally three states being solids, liquids and gases. Solid state is defined as the study of the structure, properties and the synthesis of solid materials.
Complete answer:
Solid state is defined as the study of structure, properties and synthesis of solid materials. It is also called materials chemistry. It helps us to understand the compound from the molecular to the crystal structure level.
Based on the way the constituent particles are arranged, the solids are further classified into two categories.
-Crystalline solids
-Amorphous solids
Crystalline solids are defined as the solids having a typical geometry of the structure of the compound. They have a very sharp melting point and start melting as soon as they reach there. They have a typical arrangement of particles. They are cut into two pieces by knife; the newly generated pieces are smooth and plain. This property is called cleavage property. They also have a definite and discrete heat of fusion.
Amorphous solids which do have the property of rigidity and incompressibility but to an extent. They have a proper structure. These have the tendency to go soft at higher temperatures and they can be moulded into different shapes. They are also named as super cooled liquids or pseudo-fluids. They do have a tendency to flow but very slowly. When they are cut by a sharp edge tool, they have pieces which have irregular shapes.
Glass is an amorphous solid.
Note:
Amorphous solids have the same value of physical property in whichever direction you went, these are supposed to be called isotropic nature.
