Hint:Glaciers can be defined as massive pieces of ice that have a very slow movement over land. The word ‘Glacier’ is derived from the French term ‘Glace’ ,meaning ice. They are also called “rivers of ice.”

Complete answer:
Formulation of glaciers starts when more snow accumulates every year then melts. The snow starts compressing after the snow sets in, due to compression the snow becomes tightly packed and denser. From fluffy and light texture the snow gets converted into hard ice stones. Then hard snow gets even more compressed. Due to continuous compression, the snow becomes very dense and it;s texture gets very grainy. This granny ice is referred to as firn. Firnifrication is a phenomenon when snow gets turnt into glacial ice on compression and compaction.

Glaciers are split into two categories: ice sheets and alpine glaciers. The formation of alpine glaciers take place on mountainsides and then these alpine glaciers start moving in the downward direction via valleys. Alpine glaciers are even known for deepening or creating valleys, it is done when soil, dirt and other materials are pushed out the way of glaciers. Except for Australia, one can find alpine glaciers on the mountains of every continent. Another name for alpine glaciers is mountain glaciers or valley glaciers. Now coming onto ice sheets, these are not limited only to mountain areas which are unlike alpine glaciers. Once it starts spreading, Ice sheets cover everything around them with a thick blanket of ice. Continental glaciers are known as the largest ice sheets. Most of Greenland island and the continent of Antarctica is covered with ice sheets.

Hence, the correct answer is option (A).

Note:During the Ice Age period almost one-third of Earth’s surface was coerced with glaciers but right now only ten percent of Earth’s surface is covered with glaciers and due to global warming and climate this percentage is decreasing day by day.
