Forest Research Institute (FRI) is an institute set up by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and is the best institute for forestry in India. It is located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The campus was first set up in 1878 as the foundation of the British Imperial Forest School. Later, it was established as Forest Research Institute in 1906 and was declared as a deemed university in 1991.
The campus of this institute hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy. IGNFA is a staff college which provides training to the officers selected for the Indian Forest Service. It also hosts a Central Academy for State Forest Services. The institute has a well-developed infrastructure with equipped labs, arboreta, herbarium, library, experimental field areas etc. and has many different kinds of trees from around the world.
