Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi, which is located in the Indian subcontinent's Punjab region. The village, now known as Nankana Sahib, is situated near the city of Lahore in present-day Pakistan. Sikhs around the world observe the auspicious occasion of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on the Pooranmashi (full moon) day of the lunar month of Katak (October-November), which falls on a different date each year. His father was a member of a sub-cast of the Khatri mercantile caste. He married the daughter of Khatri, who bore him two sons.
Several followers of Guru Nanak Dev Ji were there. It would be impractical to name a few but he visited through his four udasis, his followers scattered through each of the towns and villages. Many castes belonged to his followers, but they were primarily traders, farmers, craftsmen, and craftsmen. Thus, Guru Nanak's followers were all householders and adopted productive and useful occupations. They were expected to contribute to the general funds of the group of followers.
Hindus, Muslims, and others who have been fed up with warring religious bandits have found solace in Nanak Dev Ji. In India, in bhakti marg, the 14th and 15th centuries brought a renaissance. It was time for Naam Sankeertan's singing and for the band. Gurunanak Dev Ji started a band, singing for Satya Naam's glory. People were fed up with Quazi Pandits and priests of various religions who misled and quarrelled with each other in society with all sorts of rituals and practises.
Like other Sants, Guru Nanak Dev Ji propagated devotion to a full Guru-Satguru. He needed no support from others. He did not change his religion but raised above all religions into Satya Bhakti. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is also called Satguru Nanak, Baba Nanak, Nanak Shah Fakir, Bhagat Nanak, by people from different religions.

Note: Some prominent followers were Mardana Ji who played the rabab and accompanied Guru Nanak Dev Ji in his journeys and Bhai Lena who later took forward the Sikh religion and was given the title of Guru Angad Dev Ji.
